Online Rituals Workshop

Lesson One

Before you start, what are online rituals?

Online rituals are one way for those unable to attend their local Temple, Shrine, or meeting to get together with others and raise energy for whatever is required whether to celebrate a Sabbat or Esbat or to send healing energy in a Healing Ritual or to celebrate the remembrance or life of a deceased loved one through a Memorial Ritual.

There are many ways to write online rituals but I have found this is an easy way as it encompasses the basic ritual and at the same time gives those attending a good experience.

It is very important to remember that online rituals rely on visualisation and therefore you must paint a picture in words of what is happening so that those taking part can imagine or visualise without any problems.  You must however watch how much information you include in ritual as too much can extends the length unreasonably and this will drive away participants.

Instructions on when to respond should also be included in the copying and pasting of ritual into your ritual room window, so a response can be given at the appropriate time by those attending.  If this is not done then those attending will not know when to answer.  With online rituals there are no visual clues as in an offline ritual so everyone attending has to rely on typed instructions.

You should try to advertise your online rituals extensively, if no one knows you are putting them on then you won’t have anyone turn up.  Remember to state clearly the time and time zone, as online rituals can be attended by anyone across many time zones, and do not forget the date and the online address of all your rituals when advertising them.

Any ritual you write can be as basic or as elaborate as you like, bearing in mind that people are easily bored and unless they can take part by responding in some way they will leave before it is finished.  This has been known to happen, even when a ritual has been a good one, because it was a little too long.   If this does happen then do not be upset, maybe taking part in ritual is not for those that have left after all. But do try and keep the length reasonable as there is nothing worse than a ritual that seems to drag on and people are then clock watching for the end or leave before it finishes. The average acceptable length of a ritual is 40 to 45 minutes but of course this can be shorter for a regular Healing Ritual.

The easiest and best way to learn how online rituals are done is to sit in on one.

There are many online rituals but the ones I can tell you are the ones held by my

Temples.

Ritual, whether online or off can be basic or elaborate. Think about your daily life and the rituals you do each day that you don’t give a second thought to.  Some are simple such as getting up at the same time each morning and getting ready for work or school.  Others can be extremely elaborate such as organising a celebration such as an anniversary or birthday.

Although sometimes, celebrations can be simple but can be just as successful. This is also true of rituals, if you are doing ritual just for yourself you can make it extremely simply and it is no less effective or important than an elaborate one.

It is said that ritual should be spontaneous and so it can be, once you are experienced, but when we have not a clue about how it is supposed to be done we can be unnecessarily frightened by it.

It is possible to lead an online ritual without first composing one, it’s not absolutely necessary to write one from the beginning ahead of time but it does mean that your ritual will be complete if you do, and you can ensure you have an enjoyable ritual for those attending and yourself, as you can relax and not worry about what should come next.

If you do want to perform a spontaneous online ritual when you are experienced and know what you are doing, you could have just the order of service available where you can see it so you don’t leave anything out.

A well written online ritual can touch everyone just as easily as offline rituals.

So when writing a ritual whether for online performance or offline, bare in mind the reason why you are writing it.

Our online rituals are very basic especially the healing rituals we hold on Fridays.
Admittedly our Sabbat and Esbat Rituals are a little more elaborate but that is because we have been doing ritual for quite a long time for our
Temples and our ritual leaders are experienced in leading ritual online and off.

Before you begin any ritual composition you must decide what you are writing it for.

Healing, Full Moon, New Moon or Sabbat and research appropriately for all correspondences, associations and Gods and Goddesses you wish to invoke for example for our Healing Rituals, we frequently use Isis.   Isis is a universal Goddess and can be invoked for almost any ritual.

You can use any Goddess or God associated with the ritual you are performing, you do not have to stay with a particular pantheon, use whichever Goddess and God would be appropriate.

When doing online ritual you should assign roles to others in attendance but it is best to arrange this before the time so that everyone is prepared.    We tend to just have quarter callers but you can if you wish have callers for the Goddess, God and the Ancestors, although this would tend to make the ritual a little longer and that is not advisable, the Ritual Leader would be best in invoking these.

For some ritual we do invoke Ancestors, whether they are personal Ancestors or the Traditions Ancestors. Either or both would be appropriate and if you know of a specific Ancestor that had an association with whatever your ritual is for such as a healing ritual then it’s very appropriate to invoke that Ancestor.

If it is an important Festival or Moon ritual that you will be leading then you can have as many roles allotted as you wish but bare in mind it will make your ritual much longer and possibly people attending will leave before the ritual has finished.  Also this must be arranged ahead of time by the leader, as it’s not good deciding at start of ritual that you need callers, this just delays ritual and puts off those attending.

What I would like everyone to be able to do, once you’ve completed this course is lead a ritual you have written yourself, but that is not immediate as experience in leading or taking part properly in ritual is most important and therefore a basic ritual will be included in this workshop at the end that you may use to start with.  You can also take any pre written ritual from elsewhere and adapt it to whatever you want it to be.

I do advise always to try and attend an online ritual performed by some one else as this does give you a really good idea of how they are done and how successful they can be. As I have Said there are many ways of performing online ritual and once you are confident you can perform them whichever way suits you.

One important thing about online rituals is where to do them.  If you already have a web site then you probably have a chat facility. This will be ideal as long as it’s not complicated for anyone to be able to log on.   You don’t want to go to the trouble of writing a ritual getting your quarter callers organised and then find anyone trying to access you ritual room can’t get in.

Make it simple for people to get in but at the same time not open to anyone, try and make it as secure as you can.   This is where advertising wisely works, you only advertise to groups you know you can trust and to people you know you can trust. Do not advertise on the internet to all and sundry as you will get all sorts of people turn up and cause mayhem.

Also it is a good idea to have an alternative room available at short notice as the internet is renowned for all sorts of unexpected problems.   I have used http://www.chatzy.com as an alternative as it’s a basic chat room anyone can access if you give them the address personally; this is easily arranged if you post it on the page where your usual room is accessible so that if there is a problem people know where you are.

However there are many free chat rooms available and I advise that you research this yourself to find one you like and are happy with.
